Trend Talk Discussion – Rustic Weddings

In a recent article I spoke about the rise of rustic weddings. I decided to ask our wedding panel some specifics and 61 brides responded.

Of the 61, 27 said they did or plan to implement some rustic elements in their wedding. That’s 44% and while the total response is more like an online focus group it does show the interest level is high.

I also asked them select which of these rustic elements applied to their wedding.

Barn as the venue 15.40%
Country rustic theme 26.90%
Full rustic theme 7.70%
Other 11.50%
Rustic centerpieces 57.70%
Rustic decorations 53.80%
Rustic invitations 30.80%
Rustic venue 46.20%

Then I asked them why they decided to implement the rustic elements selected above. Here are their direct answers.

  • I LIKED THE VENUE AND THE ATMOSPHERE THAT THE RUSTIC STYLE CREATES. ITS ELEGANT BUT RELAXED.
  • I like the style, and it fits my fiancé and my personalities and interests.
  • I wanted a casual, laid back wedding that was still classy.
  • It felt right for us.
  • It is a more casual wedding.
  • It is an outdoor ceremony & reception, and we live in Albuquerque, so it fits everything well.
  • They are in tune with simplicity and eco-centricity
  • They fit with the overall look of our wedding
  • To make it more classic
  • We incorporated both rustic with outdoors theme and it became a Victorian Christmas theme.
  • We’re a rustic kind of couple
  • for a natural feel
  • My concept of a rustic wedding appeals much more to both me and my fiancé, and fits our personality styles much better, than other stereotypical kinds of weddings. We are also both very environment-minded, and love being outdoors, camping, being in nature, and so incorporating such elements into our wedding was very fitting. Of course, the term “rustic” may mean different things to different people, but for us meant incorporating naturalistic elements, finding a venue that seemed more outdoorsy, rustic and pre-modern (our venue is a log cabin style farm b&b on ~ 140 acres that was designed to look like an 1860s cabin), focusing on things like trail hiking and old-time / Celtic music as the entertainment and fun stuff, giving out living tree saplings as favors, etc.
  • We are outdoorsy people. I wanted to implement natural elements into the decor while still keeping it formal/nice.
  • I really like the outdoors and figured rustic elements would reflect this, also seems homier. We are having the wedding in upstate New York, we have been living in the city for a while and miss the country.
  • We wanted a wedding that felt “laid back” and “easy going”. Plus the decorations were less expensive than something fancier.
  • Our venue is a working cattle ranch and the dinner will be held in a barn that was turned into a rustic indoor/outdoor living room. We fell in love with the venue and decided to embrace rather than fight with the rustic theme.
  • We love the outdoors and nature. Our home looks like the outside on the inside with wooden/tree like looking furniture. Why not be us at our wedding? We’re going to be in a hunting lodge at the top of a mountain. Awesomeness.
  • I found an old carriage house that I fell in love with and wanted to use it as part of our wedding location,
  • We did not want a formal look, it is just not us. So we did it to give us a classy look that wasn’t too formal.
  • I have always been a country girl, and growing up in a rural country area, it only seemed to right to tie the theme into my wedding. I think it gives it a personal touch and reveals our true personalities.
  • We wanted a casual, outdoor wedding with a barn as our reception site. Our plan was to have a wedding weekend where family and friends could actually spend time together before and after the big event. Rustic details fit perfectly with the barn and Vermont countryside.
  • I like the feel of these elements. It’s casual yet contemporary at the same time. I think it makes the guests feel at home
  • We will be in a historical building; our “rustic” element is old mason jars as candle holders as centerpieces and around the room. We thought it fit well with the venue and would save us some money.
