The average cost of a wedding increased 22.9% in 2010, from $19,581 (2009) to $24,066 (2010). This is great news for a struggling wedding industry. 50 products and services saw an increase in spending with wedding planning services out performing all other categories, up 23% to 77%. Accessories, Beauty, Health and Spa took the biggest hit in spending down between -10% and -65%. We believe that renewed consumer confidence and an increase in the number of guest from 128 (2009) to 141 (2010) contributed to the increase in spending and demand for products and services. The average cost includes all items except the Engagement Ring. The average wedding cost is the weighted average demand.

Methodology

5,977 survey samples were collected between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. Samples were collected through the multi-channel industry group called “Wedding Industry Survey Network (WISN).” More information about the WISN can be obtained from weddingindustry.org.

Survey samples include brides, grooms (pre and post wedding) and wedding professionals. Samples from brides and grooms include multiple ethnicities, income levels, first, second, and third plus marriages, ages 18 to 90, across the entire US in large and small cities. Couples either married in 2010 or spent money for a product or service in 2010 for their 2011 wedding. Samples from vendors were collected as part of the State of the Industry study. Total wedding cost based on weighted average demand of items included in the wedding.

Collection of data included the following WISN participants:
